How Math Can Save Your Life
Speaker:
Chris Budd, University of Bath
Date and Time:
Tuesday, October 30, 2018 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm
Location:
Fields Institute, Room 230
Abstract:
Many of us have been in a medical scanner and benefited from its use in medical diagnostics. But how many of us have considered how it works?
In this talk, Professor Budd will describe the maths behind modern medical imaging. such as CAT and MRI, and illustrate how mathematics done in 1915 is now saving countless numbers of lives. In addition, Professor Budd will discuss how recent advances in mathematics are leading to much better images for doctors to use in their diagnoses; and how similar methods and ideas are being used in diverse applications elsewhere such as remote sensing, crime detection, and saving the whales.
