Proposals and Applications
Information on how to propose programs and activities to the Fields Institute and how to apply to visit the Institute
In proposing an activity, applicants are requested to consider the mandate of the Institute to broaden and enlarge the community. Applicants should address the representation of women and members of minorities in the proposed activity and should ensure that participants include scientists representing a range of career levels, types of institutions, and geographical locations in Canada and abroad.
Thematic or Focus Program Proposals
The Fields Institute solicits proposals for a variety of programs in areas of current research interest in the mathematical sciences. We currently host:
- Major thematic programs (four or six months in length), and
- Short thematic or focus programs (one to two months in length).
Application deadlines are March 15 and September 15 of each year, in advance of the two annual meetings of the Institute's Scientific Advisory Panel, which reviews and evaluates all proposals for thematic and focus program. Organizers are advised that a lead time of at least two years is recommended.
General Scientific Activity Proposals
The Fields Institute supports General Scientific Activities (GSA) in the mathematical sciences such as workshops, conferences, seminars, and summer schools. Proposals for GSAs should be submitted by February 15, June 15, or October 15 of each year.
Decisions are typically announced within six weeks of the submission deadline, except in the case of proposals requesting support over $25,000. The latter are considered by the Scientific Advisory Panel and decisions are announced by early June or December for proposals submitted by the preceding February or October deadlines (respectively). A lead time of at least nine (9) months is recommended between the deadline for submission and the date of the event.
Outreach Proposals
The Fields Institute provides support up to $25,000 for projects whose goal is to promote mathematical culture at all levels and bring mathematics to a wider audience. Deadlines for submissions are February 15, June 15 or October 15 of each year, with decisions typically announced within six weeks of the corresponding deadline. A lead time of at least nine (9) months is recommended between the deadline for submission and the date of the event.
Note on diversity: In proposing any activity, applicants are requested to consider the mandate of the Institute to broaden and enlarge the community. Applicants should address the representation of women and members of minorities in the proposed activity and should ensure that participants include scientists representing a range of career levels, types of institutions, and geographical locations in Canada and abroad.
Visiting Scholars
Applications are invited to be a visiting member at the Fields Institute. Members are expected to carry out their proposed research program, participate in the activities related to their interests, and collaborate with other visiting members. Applications can be submitted anytime but will be considered three times a year: February 15, June 15, and October 15.
