Some Glocal Context for the 1924 ICM: Toronto, Business, and John Charles Fields
This paper situates John Charles Fields his ICM moment in 1924, paralleling his own work, career, and role in the 1924 conference with the local and global business networks that emanated outward from the city of Toronto. By 1924, Toronto and its business milieu were undergoing a transformation as many of the city’s local businesses were increasingly national and international in scope and aspiration. Firms (and families) from the Massey’s, Eaton’s, Gooderham’s, and others can be seen as an analogue to Fields’ own glocal outlook as a Canadian scholar with an international outlook. Utilizing visuals and some firm histories, this paper centres Fields in his Toronto context, a city that was changing quickly, both in terms of its urban, academic, social, and cultural spaces, but also its economic status (particularly in comparison to Monreal) and its business community. In so doing, the paper will also attempt try to draw some lessons learned through the broader parallels between 1924 and today.
