The Canadian Statistics Student Conference (CSSC) is a national conference organized by students. Currently in its eighth year, it was initiated by the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) to provide support to students and recent graduate members who are pursuing careers in statistics and related fields.
The mandate of this conference is to introduce or encourage conference participation, enhance students’ skills in presenting their research in a low-stress environment, and to engage in conver- sation with graduate students and professors across Canada in the fields of mathematics and statistics. First, the event provides a common venue for networking, and it also gives students and recent graduates a chance to learn about career opportunities. Second, it provides a com- mon venue for sharing ideas and for holding discussions with others about research. A wide range of statistical interests are represented, which include actuarial science, biostatistics, bu- siness and industrial statistics, probability, statistical education and survey methods. Third, as organizers, the student conference is a great training ground for the development of our leadership roles, an essential trait to have as academics within our discipline. Finally, to many of the young attendees, student conferences are the beginning for many future academics.
